Biography

Karl Blench (b. 1981) is a Houston-based composer, conductor, and educator. He earned his undergraduate music education and music theory degrees from the University of New Hampshire. After teaching middle school music, he moved to Texas in 2005 to pursue graduate studies at Rice University, where he earned both his master’s and doctoral degrees in music composition.

Blench’s music is celebrated for its "Texas-sized statements" and for being "heartbreakingly beautiful.” His music has reached audiences around the globe, with performances by esteemed ensembles such as the Axiom Quartet, the h2 Quartet, and Duo Dramatique. His works have graced some of the most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, showcasing his widespread recognition in the classical music world.

Additionally, Blench's compositions have been performed by renowned ensembles such as the Indianapolis Symphony, the University of New Hampshire Wind Ensemble, the University of Houston Wind Ensemble, and the Shepherd School of Music Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra.

In addition to composing, Blench is a sought-after arranger and orchestrator. His orchestration of Dan Brown’s Wild Symphony for both orchestra and wind ensemble has been performed by ensembles worldwide. In 2018, he fully arranged the debut album of the Houston-based Axiom Quartet, which received glowing reviews from The WholeNote and American Record Guide.

 

Currently, Blench serves as the music director and conductor of Symphony North of Houston and as a lecturer at Rice University.
