Bio
Karl Blench is originally from western Massachusetts, and currently resides in Houston Texas where he attends Rice University. He holds a master’s degree from Rice in composition, and bachelor’s degrees from the University of New Hampshire in theory and music education. His music has been played throughout the country and Europe. He was the winner of the Cooper Prize in Composition (2007) for his piece Abstract No. 1, and the winner of the Fourth Annual H. Robert Reynolds Composers Competition, for which he received a performance of his piece, Momentum, by the National Wind Ensemble at Carnegie Hall. Mr. Blench has received numerous commissions ranging from high school orchestras to professional soloists. In the summer of 2007 he attended the Freie Universität in Berlin, where he studied composition with Samuel Adler, and conducting with Emily Freedman Brown. His major composition teachers include Kurt Stallmann, Pierre Jalbert, Shih-Hui Chen, and Andrew Boysen.
As a conductor, Blench has served as assistant conductor for the New Hampshire Youth Symphony Orchestra, and appeared as guest conductor with the University of New Hampshire Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra. At Rice, he is one of the student coordinators for 20/21, the student new music ensemble. He often conducts student's works and is an advocate for the performance and creation of new music. His primary conducting studies were with William Kempster.
Before coming to Houston, Blench was public school teacher in Massachusetts, and is still actively involved in the education of all levels of students. He has taught at the Summer Youth Music School in New Hampshire for the past seven years, where he has taught theory, trombone, and composition. He has experience teaching Montessori education, in particularly young children (5-11). Currently, he teaches theory at the International Music School in Houston.
